Sura 56: Al-Wāqiʿah (The Event)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, The All Gracious, The All Merciful

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ١

[56:1] When the event transpires-

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ٢

[56:2] -no one can deny its occurrence.

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ٣

[56:3] Humiliating and exulting.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ٤

[56:4] When the ground trembled from its foundation-

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ٥

[56:5] and the mountains were like fluffy wool.

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ٦

[56:6] Then they were scattered like dust.

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً ٧

[56:7] And you were stratified into three groups.

فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ٨

[56:8] Then there are the dwellers of the bliss, oh what dwellers of the bliss!

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ٩

[56:9] And the dwellers of misery, woe to the dwellers of misery!

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ١٠

[56:10] And the front-runners, far ahead of all.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ١١

[56:11] These shall be the closest.

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ١٢

[56:12] In blissful paradises.

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ١٣

[56:13] A group from the early generations.

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ١٤

[56:14] And a few from the later generations.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ١٥

[56:15] On furnishings adorned with precious stones.

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ ١٦

[56:16] Relaxing on them; they will be neighbors.

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ١٧

[56:17] Mingling with them will be immortal children.

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ ١٨

[56:18] With goblets, pitchers, and cups filled with pure drinks.

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ ١٩

[56:19] They never run out of it and they never get tired.

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ ٢٠

[56:20] And there will be fruits of their choice.

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ٢١

[56:21] And the meat of birds that they desire.

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ ٢٢

[56:22] And beautiful companions-

كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ٢٣

[56:23] -like protected pearls.

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٢٤

[56:24] A just reward for their deeds.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا ٢٥

[56:25] They will never hear any nonsense therein nor a sinful utterance.

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا ٢٦

[56:26] Only the utterance of peace, peace.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٢٧

[56:27] Then there are the dwellers of the bliss, oh what dwellers of the bliss!

فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ ٢٨

[56:28] In lush orchards-

وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ ٢٩

[56:29] -decorated trees with fruits.

وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ ٣٠

[56:30] And extended shade.

وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ ٣١

[56:31] And ever-flowing water.

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ ٣٢

[56:32] And abundant fruit.

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ ٣٣

[56:33] Never running out, never forbidden.

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ ٣٤

[56:34] And exalted furnishings.

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً ٣٥

[56:35] We will initiate them, a special initiation.

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا ٣٦

[56:36] And We will make them virtuous.

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا ٣٧

[56:37] Perfectly matched,-

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٣٨

[56:38] -for the dwellers of the bliss.

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ٣٩

[56:39] A group from the early generations-

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ٤٠

[56:40] And a group from the later generations.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ٤١

[56:41] As for the dwellers of misery, woe to the dwellers of misery!

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ ٤٢

[56:42] They will be in simoom and scalding water.

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ٤٣

[56:43] And burning shade.

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ٤٤

[56:44] Never cooling, never pleasing.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ٤٥

[56:45] Indeed, they used to be opulent before this.

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٤٦

[56:46] And they insisted on the great perjury.

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ٤٧

[56:47] And they used to say, when we die and become dust and bones, will we then indeed be resurrected?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ٤٨

[56:48] And our ancestors?

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ٤٩

[56:49] Say; indeed the early generations as well as the later ones,-

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ٥٠

[56:50] -all will indeed be summoned for the meeting on an appointed day.

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ٥١

[56:51] Now here you are O you deviators, liars.

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ ٥٢

[56:52] You will surely eat from the tree of bitterness.

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ٥٣

[56:53] Then you will fill your stomachs therewith.

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ٥٤

[56:54] Then you drink scalding water on top of it.

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ٥٥

[56:55] Indeed, you will drink with an un-quenching thirst.

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ٥٦

[56:56] This will be their share on the Day of Faith.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ٥٧

[56:57] We have created you, do you not agree?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ٥٨

[56:58] Do you see the semen that you produce?

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ ٥٩

[56:59] Did you create it, or are We the Creator?

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ٦٠

[56:60] We have decreed death for you, and We never fail-

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ٦١

[56:61] -to replace you and to initiate you as something you cannot comprehend.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ٦٢

[56:62] And you certainly know about the first creation; why then do you not take heed?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ٦٣

[56:63] Do you see what you harvest?

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ ٦٤

[56:64] Did you farm it or are We the farmer?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ ٦٥

[56:65] Had We willed, We could have turned it into hay, then you would have ended up astonished.

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ ٦٦

[56:66] We have indeed suffered a real loss,-

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ٦٧

[56:67] -indeed we have been deprived.

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ٦٨

[56:68] Do you see the water that you drink?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ ٦٩

[56:69] Do you cause it to come down from the cloud or do We?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ ٧٠

[56:70] Had We willed, We could have made it salty, therefore, why are you not appreciative?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ٧١

[56:71] Do you see the fire that you ignite?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ ٧٢

[56:72] Did you initiate its tree or are We the initiator?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ ٧٣

[56:73] We have made it a reminder and a provision to strengthen you.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٧٤

[56:74] Therefore, glorify the name of your Lord, The Great.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ٧٥

[56:75] I therefore swear by the positions of the stars.

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ٧٦

[56:76] And this is certainly a mighty oath if you only knew.

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ ٧٧

[56:77] This is indeed an honorable Quran.

فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ ٧٨

[56:78] In a protected book.

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ ٧٩

[56:79] No one can understand it except for the pure at heart.

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ٨٠

[56:80] A revelation from the Lord of the Multiverse.

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ ٨١

[56:81] Are you taking this narration lightly?

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٨٢

[56:82] And are you making it your business to stubbornly reject it?

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ٨٣

[56:83] Then when she reaches the throat,-

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ ٨٤

[56:84] -and you all look around wandering.

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ ٨٥

[56:85] However, We are closer to him than all of you, but you cannot see.

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ٨٦

[56:86] Therefore, if you do not owe anything,-

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ ٨٧

[56:87] -bring her back, if you are truthful.

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ ٨٨

[56:88] Then, if he is one of the close ones,-

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ ٨٩

[56:89] -he will have enjoyment, and a Paradise full of bliss.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٩٠

[56:90] And if he is of the dwellers of the bliss,-

فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٩١

[56:91] -then, peace upon you from the dwellers of the bliss.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ٩٢

[56:92] And if he is one of the liars, deviators,-

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ ٩٣

[56:93] he will then descend into an intolerable Hell.

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ ٩٤

[56:94] And the abode of the Inferno.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ ٩٥

[56:95] Indeed, this is the absolute truth.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٩٦

[56:96] Therefore, glorify the name of your Lord, The Great.
