Sura 68: Al-Qalam (The Pen)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, The All Gracious, The All Merciful

نُونْ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ١

[68:1] Nün, by Nün. By the pen and what they write.

مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ ٢

[68:2] Regarding your Lord's blessings, you are not crazy.

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ ٣

[68:3] And indeed there will be a well deserved recompense for you.

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ ٤

[68:4] And you possess a great moral character.

فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ ٥

[68:5] You will soon see and they will also see-

بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ ٦

[68:6] -which one of you is being tested.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ ٧

[68:7] Indeed your Lord knows best who has strayed off His path, and He knows best the guided ones.

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٨

[68:8] Therefore, do not obey the rejecters.

وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ٩

[68:9] They love to compromise so that you may compromise.

وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ ١٠

[68:10] And do not obey every lowly swearer,-

هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ ١١

[68:11] -a slanderer, a ubiquitous backbiter, a malicious gossiper,-

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢

[68:12] -forbidder of righteousness, transgressor, sinner.

عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ١٣

[68:13] Cruel and utterly useless,-

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ ١٤

[68:14] -although he possesses money and sons.

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ١٥

[68:15] When Our proofs are recited to him, he says, tales from the past.

سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ ١٦

[68:16] We will soon mark his nose.

إِنَّا بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ ١٧

[68:17] Indeed, We tested them just as We tested the proprietors of the garden, as they were confident to pick the fruits in the morning.

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ ١٨

[68:18] However, they had no idea.

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ ١٩

[68:19] Then, a visitor from your Lord arrived while they were asleep.

فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ ٢٠

[68:20] Consequently, by the morning, it became completely barren.

فَتَنَادَوْا۟ مُصْبِحِينَ ٢١

[68:21] In the morning, they announced,-

أَنِ ٱغْدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰرِمِينَ ٢٢

[68:22] -it is morning, go to your harvest, if you are to reap it.

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمْ يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ ٢٣

[68:23] They therefore departed, whispering,-

أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ ٢٤

[68:24] -do not let any needy person enter it today.

وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَـٰدِرِينَ ٢٥

[68:25] And so they started the morning, completely resolute.

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ ٢٦

[68:26] But when they saw it, they said, we have certainly lost.

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ٢٧

[68:27] Yes indeed, we have been deprived.

قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ ٢٨

[68:28] The just one amongst them said; did I not tell you that you should glorify?

قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ ٢٩

[68:29] They said; glory to our Lord, we have certainly been transgressors.

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ ٣٠

[68:30] Then they turned to one another blaming.

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـٰغِينَ ٣١

[68:31] They said; woe to us, we have indeed been rebellious.

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ ٣٢

[68:32] Perhaps, our Lord will give us in exchange something better than this; we certainly seek our Lord.

كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٣

[68:33] Such is the suffering; however, the suffering of the Hereafter is far greater. If they only knew.

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٣٤

[68:34] Surely, the righteous will be at their Lord in blissful paradises.

أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ٣٥

[68:35] Shall We therefore treat the peace offerors like the guilty?

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٦

[68:36] What is the matter with your judgment?

أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَـٰبٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ ٣٧

[68:37] Do you have a book through which you learn?

إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ ٣٨

[68:38] Can you indeed find in it anything you like?

أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَـٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَـٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ ٣٩

[68:39] Have you taken an oath from Us until the Day of Resurrection that you indeed shall have anything you want?

سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ ٤٠

[68:40] Ask them, is this what they think?

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَـٰدِقِينَ ٤١

[68:41] Do they have partners for god? Then let them bring forth their partners for god, if they are truthful.

يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ٤٢

[68:42] The day when they will be completely exposed and they will be invited to fall prostrate but they cannot.

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَـٰلِمُونَ ٤٣

[68:43] With their eyes subdued, overwhelmed with humility, they realize they were invited to fall prostrate when they were whole and able.

فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٤٤

[68:44] Therefore, do not blame Me, and whoever rejects this narration, We will put them in their places from where they least expect.

وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ ٤٥

[68:45] And inform them that My system is indeed formidable.

أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ ٤٦

[68:46] Are you asking them for a wage that heavily burdens them?

أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ ٤٧

[68:47] Do they know the future and have recorded it?

فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ ٤٨

[68:48] Therefore, be patient for your Lord's judgment and do not be like the companion of the fish, as he called out in agony.

لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ ٤٩

[68:49] If it were not for a blessing from his Lord that touched him, he would have been thrown into the desert in disgrace.

فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ ٥٠

[68:50] But, His Lord chose him and made him one of the righteous ones.

وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجْنُونٌ ٥١

[68:51] And the unfaithful almost want to wipe you out with their eyes when they hear the message; and they say; he is surely crazy.

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ٥٢

[68:52] And this is but a message to all.
