Sura 70: Al-Maʿārij (The Highest Heights)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, The All Gracious, The All Merciful

سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ ١

[70:1] A questioner asked about an inevitable punishment.

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ ٢

[70:2] The unfaithful have no defender against-

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ ٣

[70:3] God, possessor of the highest heights.

تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ٤

[70:4] The angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a day that its length is fifty thousand years.

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا ٥

[70:5] Therefore be patient, a graceful patience.

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا ٦

[70:6] They surely see it far away.

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا ٧

[70:7] And We see it near.

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ ٨

[70:8] The Day when the vacuum becomes like molten lava.

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٩

[70:9] And the mountains will be like fluffy wool.

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا ١٠

[70:10] And no friend will ask about a friend.

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ ١١

[70:11] They will see them. The guilty wishes he could ransom his son on that day to avoid the suffering.

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ ١٢

[70:12] And his spouse and his brother.

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ ١٣

[70:13] And his tribe who raised him.

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ ١٤

[70:14] And everyone on the land, if only it could save him.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ ١٥

[70:15] No way, there will surely be hellfire,-

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ ١٦

[70:16] -aggressive, ready to burn.

تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ١٧

[70:17] Calling on those who turned their back and fled.

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ ١٨

[70:18] And hoarded and counted.

إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا ١٩

[70:19] Truly, the human was created impatient.

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا ٢٠

[70:20] When he suffers any hardship, he whines.

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا ٢١

[70:21] And when he is blessed, he becomes stingy.

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ ٢٢

[70:22] Except those who observe the contact prayer.

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ ٢٣

[70:23] Those who regularly observe their contact prayer.

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ ٢٤

[70:24] And those who set aside a rightful share from their money-

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ ٢٥

[70:25] -for the beggar and the deprived.

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ٢٦

[70:26] And those who acknowledge the truth regarding the Day of Faith.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ ٢٧

[70:27] And those who fear the punishment of their Lord.

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ ٢٨

[70:28] Indeed there is no security from the punishment of their Lord.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ ٢٩

[70:29] And those who keep their chastity.

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ ٣٠

[70:30] Except with their spouses or those who are rightfully theirs, then they are not to be blamed.

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ ٣١

[70:31] But those who transgress beyond this, then these are in opposition.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ ٣٢

[70:32] And those who are highly trustworthy and keep their word.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ ٣٣

[70:33] And those who stand by their testimonies.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ ٣٤

[70:34] And those who remember their contact prayers.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ ٣٥

[70:35] These will dwell as honored ones in paradises.

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ ٣٦

[70:36] Therefore, what is preventing the unfaithful from joining you?-

عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ ٣٧

[70:37] -From the right and from the left, en masse?

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ ٣٨

[70:38] Does every one of them wish to enter the blissful Paradise?

كَلَّآ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ ٣٩

[70:39] No way, We have created them and they know from what.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ٤٠

[70:40] Therefore, I swear by the Lord of all eastern locations and the western locations that We are indeed fully capable-

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ٤١

[70:41] -of substituting instead of them, those who are better than them and We will never be overtaken.

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ ٤٢

[70:42] Therefore, let them blunder and play around until they come face to face with their appointed day.

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ ٤٣

[70:43] The day when they come out of the graves in a hurry, as though they are herded to the altars.

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ ٤٤

[70:44] With their eyes subdued, humility overwhelms them. This is the day that was promised.
