Sura 9: At-Tawbah (Repentance)

بَرَآءَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ١

[9:1] Innocence has been decreed by God and His messenger for those who have a treaty with you from amongst those who set up partners for god.

فَسِيحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْزِى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ٢

[9:2] So, roam the land for four months and remember that you are certainly unable to frustrate God and that indeed God humiliates the unfaithful.

وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٣

[9:3] And a proclamation from God and His messenger to the people on the day of the great pilgrimage that indeed God is innocent of those who set up partners for god and so is His messenger. Therefore, if you repent it would be better for you but if you turn away, you shall know that you can never frustrate God. And give the unfaithful the news of a most painful suffering.

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٤

[9:4] Exempted are those who have a treaty with you from amongst those who set up partners for god, but they never break their treaty and do not band together with anyone against you, then you shall fulfill the interim of your treaty. Indeed God loves those who are god-fearing.

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٥

[9:5] Therefore, when the sacred months are over, you shall kill those who set up partners for god wherever you find them and take them captive and besiege them and keep a close eye on them. However, if they repent and observe the contact prayer and give the cleansing charity, then you shall leave them alone. Indeed God is All Forgiving, All Merciful.

وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ ٦

[9:6] And if any one of those who set up partners for god sought refuge with you, you shall grant him refuge and let him hear the word of God then you shall see him off to safety. This is because they are indeed people who do not know.

كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ فَمَا ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ لَهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٧

[9:7] Those who have set up partners for god could enter into a treaty with God and His messenger, only if they do so at the Sacred Mosque. Therefore, if they honor their part of the treaty, so shall you. Indeed God loves those who are god-fearing.

كَيْفَ وَإِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا۟ فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَأْبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ ٨

[9:8] How could there be any treaty when they have the upper hand they never keep their oath, or their promise. They only offer lip service while deep in their hearts, they never mean it and most of them are wicked.

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٩

[9:9] They traded God's proofs for a cheap price and repelled from His path. Indeed evil is what they practiced.

لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِى مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ ١٠

[9:10] They never respect a person of faith and do not keep their oath or their promise. And they are transgressors.

فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ ١١

[9:11] However, if they repent and observe the contact prayer and give the cleansing charity, then they are your brethren in faith. We thus explain the signs for people who are knowledgeable.

وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ ١٢

[9:12] And if they break their oath after they have entered into a treaty, and slander your faith, then you shall fight the leaders of infidelity, for indeed their oath is null and void, unless they refrain.

أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ١٣

[9:13] Why should you not fight the people who have violated their oath and did their utmost to evict the messenger; furthermore they were the ones who started it in the first place? Do you fear them? It is God that you should fear if you are faithful.

قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ ١٤

[9:14] You shall fight them, for God will punish them at your hands, and humiliate them and will help you to overcome them and heal the mind of the faithful.

وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ١٥

[9:15] And the rage will be removed from their hearts; and God accepts the repentance from whomever He wills, for God is All Knower, All Wise.

أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تُتْرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيجَةً وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ ١٦

[9:16] Did you think that you would be left alone without God distinguishing those amongst you who strive and do not take any ally beside God and His messenger and the faithful? Remember that God is All Cognizant of whatever you do.

مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ ١٧

[9:17] It is not to be for those who set up partners for god to contribute to the renovation of God's Mosques while they are confessing their disbelief. These are the ones who have nullified their works and they will abide in Hell forever.

إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ فَعَسَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ ١٨

[9:18] The renovation of God's Mosques is only reserved for those who believe in God and the Last Day and they uphold the contact prayer and give the cleansing charity and do not fear but God. Therefore, these are the ones who will soon be among the guided ones.

أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ ٱلْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ١٩

[9:19] Did you equate watering the pilgrims and the renovation of the Sacred Mosque to belief in God and the Last Day and striving in the cause of God? No they are not equal in the site of God. Moreover, God does not guide the transgressing people.

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ ٢٠

[9:20] The faithful who emigrated and strove in the cause of God with their money and their lives possess higher ranks in the site of God. Moreover, these are the victorious ones.

يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ ٢١

[9:21] Their Lord gives them the good news of mercy from Him and approval and paradises reserved for them full of bliss forever.

خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ ٢٢

[9:22] They abide therein eternally. Indeed God possesses at His disposal a tremendous reward.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ٢٣

[9:23] O you faithful; do not take your parents and your siblings as allies if they love disbelief instead of faith. And whoever takes them as allies from amongst you; then they are unjust.

قُلْ إِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٍ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ ٢٤

[9:24] Say; if your parents, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the money you have earned and the business you fear to lose and the homes so pleasing to you are more beloved to you than God and His messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until God issues His command. And God never guides the wicked people.

لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ ٢٥

[9:25] Indeed God gave you many victories in different territories, however, on the day of Hunain you became deluded with your great number, but it did not help you in the least and you lost vast territories and then you had to retreat.

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ٢٦

[9:26] Afterwards, God sent down peaceful slumber upon His messenger and upon the faithful and sent down invisible armies and punished the unfaithful. And such is the requital for the unfaithful.

ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٢٧

[9:27] Thereafter, God accepted the repentance of whomever He willed. And God is All Forgiving, All Merciful.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ٢٨

[9:28] O you faithful, indeed those who set up partners for god are impure, therefore, they will not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you fear loss of money, God will soon enrich you from His bounty, if He so wills. Indeed God is All Knower, All Wise.

قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَـٰغِرُونَ ٢٩

[9:29] You shall fight those who do not believe in God and the Last Day and do not prohibit what God and His messenger have prohibited and do not follow the religion of truth from those amongst the people of the scripture, unless they pay their tribute willingly and humbly.

وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ ٣٠

[9:30] And the Judeans said; Ozair is son of God while the Nazarenes said; the Healer is son of God. Such is their utterance, emulating the utterance of the unfaithful before them. God has cursed them. Why do they deviate?

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمَسِيحَ ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ ٣١

[9:31] They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords besides God, as well as the Healer son of Mary, while in fact they were all commanded to worship the one god; there is no god except He. Be He glorified, how could they set up partners for Him.

يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّآ أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ ٣٢

[9:32] They wish to put out God's light with their mouths, however, God insists upon perfecting His light, although the unfaithful may dislike it.

هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ ٱلْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّينِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ ٣٣

[9:33] He is the One who sent His messenger with guidance and the religion of truth in order to dominate all religions, although those who set up partners for god may dislike it.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْبَارِ وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٣٤

[9:34] O you faithful, indeed many religious leaders and scholars consume people's money illicitly and repel from the path of God. As for those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the cause of God, give them the news of a most painful suffering.

يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ ٣٥

[9:35] A day will come when they are overwhelmed by the fire of Gehenna, then their fronts, their sides and their backs are burned. Here is what you hoarded for yourselves, therefore, taste the results of your hoarding.

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةً كَمَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةً وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٣٦

[9:36] Indeed, the count of the months as far as God is concerned is twelve months in God's scripture since the day He created the vacua and matter; four of them are sacred. This is the eternal religion. You shall not transgress against your own souls. You shall fight those who set up partners for god in the same manner they fight you. And you shall know that indeed God is with those who are god-fearing.

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ ٣٧

[9:37] Indeed forgetting it increases disbelief. Thus, the unfaithful mislead therewith, they allow it one year and prohibit it the next year in order to nullify the number that God has prohibited and they permit what God has prohibited. Adorned for them are their evil deeds. And God does not guide the unfaithful.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱنفِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرَضِيتُم بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مِنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ فَمَا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ ٣٨

[9:38] O you faithful, why do you not mobilize in the cause of God, when you are told to do so? Are you heavily attached to the ground? Are you more satisfied with this worldly life instead of the Hereafter? The provisions of this worldly life are minuscule compared to the Hereafter.

[9:39] Unless you mobilize, He will make you suffer, a most painful suffering and will replace you with other people, and nothing will harm Him. And God is All Powerful over all things.

إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٤٠

[9:40] If you do not help him, then God has surely helped him when the unfaithful evicted him and he was one of the two in the cave; he said to his friend, do not grieve because God is with us. Thereafter, God sent down His tranquility upon him and helped him with invisible armies and made the word of the unfaithful lowly as the word of God reigned supreme. And God is Almighty, All Wise.

لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ٤٢

[9:42] If it were a quick gain and a short journey, they would have followed you; however, the long journey was too burdensome for them. They swear by God, if only they were able to go with you they would have even given up their life, however, God knows that indeed they are liars.

[9:43] God has pardoned you, but why did you grant them permission without identifying who the truthful ones are and who the liars are?

[9:44] Those who believe in God and the Last Day never ask your permission if they should strive with their money and themselves. And God has full knowledge of the god-fearing ones.

[9:46] Had they decided to go, everything would have been provided for them, however, God had the displeasure of their company and they were told to stay behind with the sedentary.

[9:47] Had they gone with you, they would have only spread corruption and they would have positioned themselves in your midst in order to spread infidelity and they would have sought those who would have lent their ears to them. And God has full knowledge of the unjust.

[9:48] Indeed they pursued infidelity in the past and made things difficult for you until the truth prevailed and God's command was established and they had to go along reluctantly.

[9:49] And some of them said; give me permission and do not put me through the test. Be aware that they will fail the test. And indeed Gehenna is surrounding the unfaithful.

[9:51] Say; everything that happens to us is decreed for us by God, He is our Lord. And in God the faithful shall trust.

[9:52] Say; are you waiting to see what will happen to us? Only one of the two good things will happen to us. We are also waiting to see what will happen to you, for it would be that either God afflicts you with a suffering from Him or you will suffer because of us. Therefore, wait and indeed we will wait along with you.

[9:55] Therefore, do not be impressed with their money and their children. Indeed God wants to make them suffer therewith in this worldly life and to annihilate them in a state of disbelief.

[9:56] And they swear by God that indeed they belong with you, however, they do not belong with you, for they are divisive people.

[9:58] And amongst them are those who fault you about the distribution of charity, therefore, if they are given therefrom, they are content; however, if they are not given therefrom, they get upset.

[9:59] And no matter what, they should have been content with whatever God gave them through His messenger and should have said; God is sufficient for us; God will soon grant us from His bounty through His messenger. Indeed we are eagerly seeking God.

[9:60] Indeed charities are reserved for the poor, the needy, the workers in charge of its expenditure, the broken hearted, to free the slaves, to forgive a debt, and in the cause of God and to spend on the refugees. This is a duty decreed by God. And God is All Knowing, All Wise.

[9:61] And among them are those who hurt the prophet by saying; he is all ears. Say, it is good for you that he listens, he has faith in God and he is faithful to the believers and he is a mercy for those of you who have faith. As for those who hurt God's messenger, awaiting them is a most painful suffering.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ ٦٢

[9:62] They swear by God for your sake in order to please you all, however, it is far more righteous to please God and His messenger, if they are faithful.

[9:63] Do they not know that whoever opposes God and His messenger, then indeed reserved for him is the fire of Gehenna wherein he abides forever? This is the worst humiliation.

[9:64] The hypocrites fear that a sura may be revealed wherein their innermost thoughts are exposed. Say, go ahead and poke fun, God will surely manifest the very thing that you are trying to avoid.

[9:65] And if you ask them, they will say; we were only kidding and playing. Say, are you making fun of God and His Signs and His messenger?

[9:66] Do not make excuses for disbelieving after attaining faith. If We pardon a group of you, We will punish another group due to their proven wickedness.

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ ٦٧

[9:67] The hypocrite men and women encourage one another to spread evil and to abandon righteous work and to be stingy. They have forgotten God and He has forgotten them. Indeed the hypocrites are wicked.

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا هِىَ حَسْبُهُمْ وَلَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ ٦٨

[9:68] God has promised the hypocrite men and women as well as the unfaithful, the fire of Gehenna wherein they abide forever. It is their just requital. And God has cursed them. And reserved for them is an everlasting suffering.

كَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْ كَمَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَٱلَّذِى خَاضُوٓا۟ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ ٦٩

[9:69] You are just like those before you, they were even more powerful than you, wealthier and had more children, thereafter, they indulged themselves; you also indulge yourselves just like they did before you, and play just like they played. These are the ones who nullified their works in this world as well as in the Hereafter, and these are the losers.

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَـٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ ٧٠

[9:70] Did they not receive the news of those before them, the people of Noah, Aad and Thamud and the people of Abraham and the dwellers of Median as well as the deviant ones? Their messengers went to them with clear proofs. But, it was not God who wronged them; it was they who wronged their own souls.

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ٧١

[9:71] The faithful men and the faithful women exhort each other to do righteous work and to prohibit evil, to uphold the contact prayer and to give the cleansing charity and to obey God and His messenger. These are the ones whom God will soon shower them with His mercy. Indeed God is Almighty, All Wise.

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِى جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ وَرِضْوَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ٧٢

[9:72] God has promised the faithful men and the faithful women paradises with flowing streams beneath them, wherein they abide forever as well as mansions in Gardens of Eden. However, God's approval is far greater. This is the greatest victory.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ٧٣

[9:73] O you prophet, you shall strive against the unfaithful and the hypocrites and be stern against them. And their abode is Gehenna, what a miserable abode.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ وَمَا نَقَمُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ أَنْ أَغْنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا۟ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا۟ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ ٧٤

[9:74] They swear by God that they never said it, but they indeed uttered the word of disbelief and preferred disbelief over peace offering and they did their best not to attain it. They would have taken revenge if it were not for the fact that God had enriched them from His bounty through His messenger. If they repent, it would be better for them, but if they revert, God will make them suffer, a most painful suffering in this world as well as in the Hereafter. Furthermore, there will be no friend or helper on the land for them.

وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَـٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَئِنْ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضْلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ ٧٥

[9:75] And amongst them are those who make a covenant with God that if we are given from His bounty, we will indeed be charitable and will surely become one of the righteous.

فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ ٧٦

[9:76] However, as soon as He showered them from His bounty, they became stingy, turned away and became averse.

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ ٧٧

[9:77] Therefore, He punished them because of hypocrisy in their heart until the day they meet Him. This is because they broke their covenant with God and because they used to lie.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلْغُيُوبِ ٧٨

[9:78] Do they not know that God knows their secrets and their whispers and that indeed God knows everything about the unseen?

ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٧٩

[9:79] These are the ones who fault the faithful for giving too much and ridicule those who cannot afford it for giving what they can afford, God ridicules them and reserved for them is a most painful suffering.

ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ ٨٠

[9:80] No matter if you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will not forgive them. This is because they disbelieved in God and His messenger. Moreover, God does not guide the wicked people.

فَرِحَ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَـٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوٓا۟ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَرِّ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَفْقَهُونَ ٨١

[9:81] The sedentary rejoiced in staying behind opposing God's messenger and were reluctant to strive with their money and themselves in the cause of God, and said, do not mobilize in such a heat. Say, the fire of Gehenna is much hotter, if you could understand.

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟ قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا۟ كَثِيرًا جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ٨٢

[9:82] Consequently, they laughed a little and cried a lot, a just requital for what they earned.

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُوا۟ مَعِىَ أَبَدًا وَلَن تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ مَعِىَ عَدُوًّا إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِٱلْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ فَٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَ ٨٣

[9:83] Therefore, if God returns you to a group of them, they ask permission to go, you shall then say; you will never go with me and will not fight the enemy alongside me. You were content to stay behind, therefore, stay with those who stayed behind.

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ ٨٤

[9:84] And you shall not attend the funeral of any of them and do not stand by his grave. Indeed they have disbelieved in God and His messenger and died in the state of wickedness.

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ ٨٥

[9:85] And do not be impressed with their money and their children. Indeed God wants to make them a source of torment for them in this world and annihilate them in a state of disbelief.

وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ ٨٦

[9:86] And when a sura is revealed advocating faith in God and strive with His messenger, the able ones amongst them ask your permission and say, please allow us to stay with the sedentary.

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ ٨٧

[9:87] They were happy to stay behind and their hearts were sealed while they did not understand.

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ ٨٨

[9:88] On the other hand, the messenger and those who attained faith along with him strove with their money and their lives. And reserved for them is goodness, and these are the winners.

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ٨٩

[9:89] God has promised them paradises with flowing streams beneath them, wherein they abide forever. This is the greatest triumph.

وَجَآءَ ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ سَيُصِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ ٩٠

[9:90] The excuse makers among the Arabs came to secure permission for themselves, while the sedentary rejected God and His messenger. The unfaithful amongst them will soon be afflicted with a most painful suffering.

لَّيْسَ عَلَى ٱلضُّعَفَآءِ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ مَا عَلَى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٩١

[9:91] There is no blame on the weak and the ill and those who cannot afford to be charitable as long as they take the advice from God and His messenger. There is no blame on the righteous amongst them. And God is All Forgiving, All Merciful.

وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا۟ مَا يُنفِقُونَ ٩٢

[9:92] As there is no blame on those who came to you asking to be carried along and you told them that you have no means to carry them, they turn away grief stricken with their eyes full of tears because they cannot find anything to offer.

إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَآءُ رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٩٣

[9:93] Only those are blamed who ask permission although they are rich. They are happy to stay behind and God has sealed their hearts and they never learn.

يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ وَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ٩٤

[9:94] They apologize to you when you return to them. Say, do not apologize; we will never believe you now that God has informed us all about you. And God sees your actions and so does His messenger, then you will return to the Knower of all secrets and declarations and He will then inform you of everything you have done.

سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ ٩٥

[9:95] They swear by God for your benefit so that when you return to them you may condone their action. You shall ignore them, for they are impure and their abode is Gehenna, a just requital for what they earned.

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ ٩٦

[9:96] They swear for your benefit that you may be satisfied with them; even if you are satisfied with them, God will never be satisfied with the wicked people.

ٱلْأَعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْرًا وَنِفَاقًا وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا۟ حُدُودَ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ٩٧

[9:97] The Arabs are the worst in infidelity and hypocrisy and the most ignorant of what God has revealed to His messenger. And God is All Knowing, All Wise.

وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَمًا وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ ٱلدَّوَآئِرَ عَلَيْهِمْ دَآئِرَةُ ٱلسَّوْءِ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ٩٨

[9:98] And amongst the Arabs are those who see their charity as a loss and they are waiting to see you besieged. They are the ones who are besieged by evil. And God is All Hearer, All Knower.

وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَـٰتٍ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَصَلَوَٰتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ أَلَآ إِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَّهُمْ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ٩٩

[9:99] And amongst the Arabs are those who believe in God and the Last Day and consider their charity as a means to get closer to God and to support the messenger. Indeed, they are the close ones. God will soon admit them into His mercy. Indeed God is All Forgiving, All Merciful.

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَـٰنٍ رَّضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى تَحْتَهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ١٠٠

[9:100] As for the early elites amongst the emigrants and the helpers and those who followed them in righteousness, God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him and He has promised them paradises with flowing streams beneath them, wherein they abide eternally. This is the greatest triumph.

وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ مَرَدُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍ ١٠١

[9:101] And among the hypocrite Arabs around you, as well as the dwellers of Medina, are those who are sticking to hypocrisy that you do not know, but We know them, We will punish them doubly, then they will face a tremendous suffering.

وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا۟ عَمَلًا صَـٰلِحًا وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ١٠٢

[9:102] As for the others who confessed their sins and mixed good deeds with evil, God may accept their repentance. Indeed God is All Forgiving, All Merciful.

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَّهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ ١٠٣

[9:103] Accept a charity from their money in order to purify and cleanse them and pray for them, for your prayer soothes them. And God is All Hearing, All Knowing.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ ٱلتَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَأْخُذُ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ١٠٤

[9:104] Do they not know that indeed God accepts repentance from His servants and accepts charity and that indeed God is Accepter of Repentance, the All Merciful.

وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ١٠٥

[9:105] And say, go on and do whatever you are doing, God sees your work and so does His messenger and the faithful. And you will soon return to the Knower of all secrets and declarations, thereafter, He will inform you of everything you have done.

وَءَاخَرُونَ مُرْجَوْنَ لِأَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ١٠٦

[9:106] As for the others who are waiting for God's command, He may punish them or He may accept their repentance. And God is All Knowing, All Wise.

وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًۢا بَيْنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ١٠٧

[9:107] As for those who turn the mosques into a harmful place as well as a center for disbelief and spreading dispute amongst the faithful and a source for those who have fought against God and His messenger in the past, and they swear that we did not mean anything but goodness, God is witnessing that indeed they are liars.

لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ وَٱللَّهُ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُطَّهِّرِينَ ١٠٨

[9:108] You shall never enter therein. Indeed entering a mosque based on righteousness from the day of inception is more correct. In it, there are men who love to be pure. Furthermore, God loves those who are pure.

أَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ تَقْوَىٰ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَٱنْهَارَ بِهِۦ فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ١٠٩

[9:109] Is the one who establishes his foundation on fear of God and His approval better or the one who builds his foundation on a flood plain that could crumble into the fire of Gehenna? And God does not guide the wicked people.

لَا يَزَالُ بُنْيَـٰنُهُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَنَوْا۟ رِيبَةً فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَّآ أَن تَقَطَّعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ١١٠

[9:110] The foundation they have established will be a source of doubt in their hearts until their hearts stop beating. And God is All Knowing, All Wise.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱشْتَرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِعَهْدِهِۦ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ فَٱسْتَبْشِرُوا۟ بِبَيْعِكُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَايَعْتُم بِهِۦ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ١١١

[9:111] Indeed God has taken the lives and money of the faithful in exchange for the Paradise. They fight in the cause of God, then they either kill or get killed, this is His truthful promise in the Torah, the Injeel and the Quran. And who is more faithful to his promise than God? Therefore, you shall have the good news of the trade you have made. And this is the greatest triumph.

ٱلتَّـٰٓئِبُونَ ٱلْعَـٰبِدُونَ ٱلْحَـٰمِدُونَ ٱلسَّـٰٓئِحُونَ ٱلرَّٰكِعُونَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدُونَ ٱلْـَٔامِرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱلنَّاهُونَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ ٱللَّهِ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ١١٢

[9:112] They are repenting, worshiping, praising, meditating, bowing, prostrating, enjoining righteousness and forbidding evil, and guardians of God's limits. And give good news to the faithful.

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى قُرْبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ ١١٣

[9:113] And it is not befitting for the prophet and the faithful to ask forgiveness for those who set up partners for god, even if they are relatives, after it is clearly evident that they are indeed destined to be the dwellers of the Inferno.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ إِلَّا عَن مَّوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَآ إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُۥٓ أَنَّهُۥ عَدُوٌّ لِّلَّهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَأَوَّٰهٌ حَلِيمٌ ١١٤

[9:114] As for Abraham, he only asked forgiveness for his father because of a promise he had given him, however, once it was clearly evident to him that he was an enemy of God, he disowned him. Indeed Abraham was extremely kind, tolerant.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُضِلَّ قَوْمًۢا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَىٰهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُبَيِّنَ لَهُم مَّا يَتَّقُونَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ ١١٥

[9:115] And God never misleads a people after He has guided them unless it is proven that they are no longer righteous. Indeed God is knowledgeable of all things.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ ١١٦

[9:116] Indeed to God belong the vacua and matter; He grants life and death. Furthermore, you have none beside God as an ally or a helper.

لَّقَد تَّابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ فِى سَاعَةِ ٱلْعُسْرَةِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِّنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّهُۥ بِهِمْ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ ١١٧

[9:117] Indeed God has accepted the repentance from the prophet and the Emigrants and the Helpers, those who followed him during the difficult time, when the hearts of a group of them almost wavered; He then accepted their repentance. Indeed He was All Kind, All Merciful towards them.

وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَن لَّا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ١١٨

[9:118] Also the three who stayed behind until the land became so straitened and so did their own souls and they realized that there is no refuge except in God, consequently, He accepted their repentance in order for them to be readmitted. Indeed God is the Accepter of Repentance, the All Merciful.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ ١١٩

[9:119] O you faithful, you shall fear God and be honest.

مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَّيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلٌ صَـٰلِحٌ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ١٢٠

[9:120] It is not befitting for the dwellers of Medina and the Arabs who live in its suburbs to abandon the messenger of God, nor shall they give priority to themselves over him. This is because indeed neither thirst nor hardship nor hunger that they suffer in the cause of God nor taking a single step to enrage the unfaithful nor inflicting any hardship on the enemy that is not recorded as a good deed. Indeed God will never put to waste the reward for the do-gooders.

وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةً صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً وَلَا يَقْطَعُونَ وَادِيًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمْ لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ١٢١

[9:121] Neither any charity they give; be it small or large, nor is there a valley they cross without being recorded for them; and God rewards them for the best of what they do.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا۟ كَآفَّةً فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟ قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ ١٢٢

[9:122] Not all the faithful shall mobilize. Some from each group shall remain behind to study the faith and warn people when they come back that they may be righteous.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ وَلْيَجِدُوا۟ فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةً وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ١٢٣

[9:123] O you faithful, you shall fight the unfaithful that attack you and let them find you stern. You shall know that God is with the god-fearing.

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ إِيمَـٰنًا فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ ١٢٤

[9:124] And when a sura is revealed, then there are those among them who ask whose faith was increased? Truly as for the faithful, it does increase their faith and they rejoice.

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ ١٢٥

[9:125] As for those with a disease in their hearts, it increases impurity upon their existing impurity and they die as unfaithful.

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ١٢٦

[9:126] Do they not see that they are indeed being tested once or twice every year, and then they do not even repent or take heed?

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ ١٢٧

[9:127] And when a sura is revealed they look at one another; does anyone see you?! They then leave. God has diverted their hearts for indeed they are people who do not understand.
