Sura 96: Al-ʿAlaq (The Embryo)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, The All Gracious, The All Merciful

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ١

[96:1] Read in the name of your Lord who created.

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ٢

[96:2] Created the human being from an embryo.

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ ٣

[96:3] Read and your Lord, the most honorable.

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ ٤

[96:4] The One who teaches how to write.

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ ٥

[96:5] He teaches the human being what he does not know.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ ٦

[96:6] Absolutely, indeed the human being is always rebellious.

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ ٧

[96:7] He sees himself in no need.

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ ٨

[96:8] Indeed, to your Lord is the final return.

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ ٩

[96:9] Do you see the one who forbids-

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ ١٠

[96:10] -a servant of god from praying?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ١١

[96:11] Is it not better if he were guided-

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ ١٢

[96:12] -or advocated righteousness?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ ١٣

[96:13] Do you see the one who rejects and ignores?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ ١٤

[96:14] Does he not realize that God can see?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ ١٥

[96:15] Absolutely, unless he refrains, We will indeed take him by the forelock.

نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ١٦

[96:16] The forelock of a liar, a wrong-doer.

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ ١٧

[96:17] Therefore, let him call for help.

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ ١٨

[96:18] We will summon the Guardians of Hell.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ ١٩

[96:19] Absolutely, do not obey him and fall prostrate and come closer.
